Harper family Sisters Sadie and Sawyer and their therapist father Will are struggling to overcome the deaths of their mother and wife. who died suddenly from a car accident one day. A disbelieving Will goes to the police. Lester escapes and Sadie finds his body hanging in her mother’s art closet.
Soon after, Sadie noticed a strange fungus. It begins to form around the house, as Sawyer sees a terrifying creature under her bed. This creature still threatens Sawyer. Meanwhile, Sadie suspects that the phenomenon is related to Lester’s suicide. She visits the Billings family’s dilapidated home. Inside she discovered Rita. Lester’s wife now has no understanding. Rita identifies the creature as the “Boogeyman,” the culprit behind her children’s deaths. The creature absorbs fear and can imitate sounds. The only way to prevent it is with light. Feeling insecure around Rita, Sadie runs away.
